Realizing you’ve lost your way

The pain of college

College is both beautiful and destructive, simultaneously formative and calamitous. Recently, college has been damaging me.

I have five tattoos. Three of them are strings of words that have impacted my life so strongly that I declared them worthy of staining my skin forever.

The first of these is a gentle request: “may my soul resist the rush.”

The second, lyrics to my favorite Billy Joel song, reminds me that it’s okay to live in the here and now: “Vienna waits for you.”

And, finally (for now), my most recent tattoo declares a truth about life: “we are all stories in the end.”

I look at these tattoos every day, and most of the time I don’t think about them for long. But tonight I could almost feel the ink draining from my skin as my inner dialogue screamed, “Nikki, you have forgotten everything!”

The struggle

This third year of college has been truly trying. Last semester, my busiest yet, was a constant balancing act. I had 3 jobs, 16 credit hours—including a major research paper and learning an ancient language—and other social obligations. This semester, I have been battling a flare-up of an autoimmune disease I developed in middle school. There have been days that getting out of bed seemed impossible and days where just eating a banana actually was impossible. Many times after class I would come home and lay down in the dark, wondering why my body decided to attack itself again after all this time. And maybe, when it comes down to it, I found myself a little afraid. A little afraid that I wasn’t smart enough, brave enough, or worth enough to make it very far.

And you know, friends, that builds up after a while. It takes a toll.

Long-term snooze

My permanent reminders, etched onto my arms not without pain, were placed on a long-term snooze. But I have awoken, and I have revived. As this semester draws to a close, I am reminded why I’m here, why college isn’t the end of my story, and that before long I’ll be thrust into the world to actually carry out something that matters.

I am not here to write news stories about radio stations for sale or about job interviews with Donald Trump. My purpose here is not to turn in papers, take tests, or prove my competency in Bible and religion (or journalism). Nor am I here simply to pass the time.

Rather, I am here to be formed toward a future and to assess my posture toward God, my community and others. I’m here to dive in head-first to the things about which I am passionate and to develop an understanding of the world that I could not come to on my own.

It feels so good to be awake again!

I’m not sure what comes after I graduate in December. The possibilities really are endless. But I know now more than ever that, wherever I go, I want to dedicate myself wholly to “the other” until my ink actually falls off my skin.

justice & freedom

There are people in this world, in this very country and abroad, who are not considered whole humans. There are people who are systemically led toward second-class citizenship via unequal access to education, poor public housing, hunger, the criminal justice system and so many other world issues. This, my friends, is what matters. This is why I am here! I’m tired of this disillusioned, privileged existence. I want to be in the dirt, digging my heels in and scraping at inequality until my fingernails fall off (too far?). Although I am just one small lady from the cornfields of Indiana, but I believe in a future that includes less poverty, less disease, less gender/sex/class/race/ethnic/all-of-the-above inequality.

I believe that, in order to make this future a reality, I have to actually do something about it. And do something I shall. I don’t want to just graduate, get a 9-5 job and live a “normal” life. I want to live as if tomorrow may never come, and I want to spend each and every “last day” of my life working to make someone else’s days better, happier and more free.

My heart is racing because for the first time in a long, long while, I have found the path I set down years ago. I have finally remembered the way.

(Please, friends, never let me forget this moment. I love you all.)

Hello, friend!

Nikki Shover

A notorious hairbrush singer and occasional worship leader, self-proclaimed Harry Potter nerd, and aspiring author, I am also a former pastor but ever-present shepherd who spends the perfect amount of time snuggling with my dog and husband. I hold a Bachelor's degree in Bible/religion and journalism and am daily striving to decipher what it means to live abundantly in this place we call home. My heart flutters for deep conversations, One Direction jam sessions, and people who don't judge my love of children's books or 80s/90s sitcoms.

As a pastor, much of my job is about relationships As a pastor, much of my job is about relationships. But sometimes, my job is about reclaiming sacred spaces that time has taken from us. Recently I got to reclaim this beautiful stained glass window that had been hidden behind a projector screen for years. Now when I enter this space, I am urged to stop. To take in the light. To breathe in the renewal of the cross. Although pastoring is a kind of difficult that cannot be put into words, it is also an incredible gift to spend so much time in the sacred — so much time alongside the light of the world. It’s beautiful when that manifests in the present, right beside us, as a reminder that God is with us, and God is within us, too.

Book 4 of ‘22 — this is my second read by Fred Book 4 of ‘22 — this is my second read by Fredrik Backman (see previous post), and I have to say: I LOVED THIS BOOK! Although I really enjoyed the first book I read of his, Ove and his community won my heart so much faster than the previous read. The book started much darker than I anticipated, but I caught on quickly that things were headed in a lighter direction. It was a witty, charming perspective on heavy topics: grief, depression, and suicide. But I am so thankful to say that community wins in this one. So thankful for the character growth and the laughs that Ove and his unexpected crew gave to me. 5⭐️ for “A Man Called Ove” — I will probably even read this book again, and that’s saying something!

Book 3 of 2022 | A beloved college professor of mi Book 3 of 2022 | A beloved college professor of mine recommended this and another of Fredrik Backman’s books to me, and I chose this one first because, *ahem,* I liked the cover. 🤷🏼‍♀️😅 Elsa was a precious character, full of innocence and trouble all at once. My favorite element of the story was the wurse (what us common folk would call a dog). Although I struggled to follow the narrative at times and the finale didn’t seem “big enough” for Granny’s fairytales, I did cry while reading this and finished it relatively quickly. I just purchased my next Backman read, and I’m curious to see how the two compare! 4⭐️ for “My Grandmother Asked Me To Tell You She’s Sorry.”

After years with a simple black and white logo I c After years with a simple black and white logo I created on Photoshop in college, I finally rebranded my website with something more representative of my mission and purpose!

My husband and I are mildly (majorly?) into Disney-Pixar’s “Up.” We named our first dog Ellie and our wedding included several thoughtful, fancied-up elements from the film. Our mailbox even features our handprints and names in the style of Ellie and Carl. This is where the balloons come into play in my logo. 🎈

The heart shape is pretty self-explanatory, given my name. 💖 Finally, the bright colors and watercolor style speak to the vibrant, abundant, creative life I have been called to live and lead others to as well. 💚🧡💜💙❤️
