Losing my words and fulfilling my dreams

A little girl’s biggest dream

I have imagined what the Pacific Northwest must be like since I was a little girl.

I’ve been enamored by the idea of the region for as long as my memory spans. When I wrote my first novel at 13, I even made Seattle a primary setting. I imagined the Pacific Northwest would be misty, like a grocery store produce aisle, and that every street would be lined with pine trees. In my dreams, Washington and Oregon were fantasy lands, places I’d never get to see because crossing the country was too far out of my reach.

That is, of course, until last Thursday. For the first time in my life, I crossed west over the Mississippi and headed to Portland for a conference.

Going on an adventure

The journey was tiring. In the final stretch home, I went more than 24 hours with no sleep and nearly 36 without a full meal. And, prior to the trip to the airport, I had met only one other person on the trip. I had no clue what I was getting myself into and was afraid the trip would be a disaster. I was afraid I wouldn’t make any new friends, that no one would like me, or that they’d think I was crazy for having spent my whole life dreaming about a trip like this.

Of course, all of those fears were crazy. I should know well enough by now not to listen to fear, and yet I still find myself giving in to the “what ifs” of life. Each and every person on the trip was a delight to be around, and I couldn’t have handpicked better traveling companions if I’d tried. We dined together, got lost in the city streets together, and formed friendships that I will always hold close to my heart for existing in the most exquisite narrative of dream-turned-reality.

My dream come true

What I’m saying is that this weekend was a dream come true for this Midwestern girl.

“How was Portland?” all of my friends have asked.

“It hurts my heart to be back,” I have replied.

It’s not that it hurts because I don’t love home. I adore the cornfields and cattle ranches and that my parents are just a two-hour drive away. It hurts because after all these years of dreaming I learned that reality was actually better than the dream.

Portland was by no means perfect, and I do not wish to romanticize it as so. There was a prevalent homeless population, an unexpected amount of people smoking cigarettes, and certainly, as with any city, there are countless problems that I can’t even begin to fathom from my weekend trip. In a lot of ways, though, Portland felt like home to me.

It was as if a space had been carved for me all those years ago when I first discovered the PNW. It felt like a place I wasn’t meant to leave, at least not forever.

Tourist travels

While there, I went to Powell’s Books, the self-proclaimed largest independent bookstore in the world. I completed my Harry Potter collection and ate far too many Voodoo donuts. There was a fancy sink that “they don’t have back in Indiana”—at least according to the overzealous but kind volunteer at the visitor’s center. I walked to the river on an overcast evening and enjoyed a sunny afternoon outside. There was a misty haze over much of my stay, and there were indeed pine trees on almost every street.

I experienced a lot of firsts on this short trip across the states. I wish I were more cohesive in my words and had something more powerful to say. Nothing I’ve said thus far feels like enough. Although I will probably tell stories from this weekend for the rest of my life, right now I just don’t know what else to say.

What an adventure filled with unexpected magic, whimsy, and fun. I am thankful, beyond it, to have finally seen a place I’ve always dreamed of.

I hold a Bachelor's degree in Bible/religion and journalism and am daily striving to decipher what it means to live abundantly in this place we call home. My heart flutters for deep conversations, One Direction jam sessions, and people who don't judge my love of children's books or 80s/90s sitcoms.

As a pastor, much of my job is about relationships As a pastor, much of my job is about relationships. But sometimes, my job is about reclaiming sacred spaces that time has taken from us. Recently I got to reclaim this beautiful stained glass window that had been hidden behind a projector screen for years. Now when I enter this space, I am urged to stop. To take in the light. To breathe in the renewal of the cross. Although pastoring is a kind of difficult that cannot be put into words, it is also an incredible gift to spend so much time in the sacred — so much time alongside the light of the world. It’s beautiful when that manifests in the present, right beside us, as a reminder that God is with us, and God is within us, too.

Book 4 of ‘22 — this is my second read by Fred Book 4 of ‘22 — this is my second read by Fredrik Backman (see previous post), and I have to say: I LOVED THIS BOOK! Although I really enjoyed the first book I read of his, Ove and his community won my heart so much faster than the previous read. The book started much darker than I anticipated, but I caught on quickly that things were headed in a lighter direction. It was a witty, charming perspective on heavy topics: grief, depression, and suicide. But I am so thankful to say that community wins in this one. So thankful for the character growth and the laughs that Ove and his unexpected crew gave to me. 5⭐️ for “A Man Called Ove” — I will probably even read this book again, and that’s saying something!

Book 3 of 2022 | A beloved college professor of mi Book 3 of 2022 | A beloved college professor of mine recommended this and another of Fredrik Backman’s books to me, and I chose this one first because, *ahem,* I liked the cover. 🤷🏼‍♀️😅 Elsa was a precious character, full of innocence and trouble all at once. My favorite element of the story was the wurse (what us common folk would call a dog). Although I struggled to follow the narrative at times and the finale didn’t seem “big enough” for Granny’s fairytales, I did cry while reading this and finished it relatively quickly. I just purchased my next Backman read, and I’m curious to see how the two compare! 4⭐️ for “My Grandmother Asked Me To Tell You She’s Sorry.”

After years with a simple black and white logo I c After years with a simple black and white logo I created on Photoshop in college, I finally rebranded my website with something more representative of my mission and purpose!

My husband and I are mildly (majorly?) into Disney-Pixar’s “Up.” We named our first dog Ellie and our wedding included several thoughtful, fancied-up elements from the film. Our mailbox even features our handprints and names in the style of Ellie and Carl. This is where the balloons come into play in my logo. 🎈

The heart shape is pretty self-explanatory, given my name. 💖 Finally, the bright colors and watercolor style speak to the vibrant, abundant, creative life I have been called to live and lead others to as well. 💚🧡💜💙❤️
