A letter to my Ravenclaw friends

A Ravenclaw-themed photo: a white backdrop, wand, Hogwarts letter, navy cardigan, "Order of the Phoenix," map of Hogsmeade from Universal Studios, a burning candle, and fairy lights.

My dear Ravenclaw friend,

You are, undoubtedly, the brains and wit in any and every room. Although you may not actually know everything (sorry), I am positive that you are the person most likely to figure out how it can be done.

Everyone knows you for your clever wit, even if some don’t appreciate it fully or at all. You are practically a walking Jeopardy! game with all those fun facts you’ve got stored away. You are incredibly endearing, at times eye-roll inducing, and consistently the person I turn to for advice. The awareness that there is more to know, more to discover, and more to consider guides you each and every day.

Professor Flitwick fist pumps in celebration

thank you

When all I can see is the impending battle, you are an overflowing well of perspective. You’ve got your head screwed on straight when all I can see is the mess. Without you, I have no doubt I’d be lost in a ditch somewhere. Thank you for keeping me on track and on mission.

You are always prepared for a challenge, even if you aren’t ready to tackle it yet (that’s what the Gryffindors are for). In your preparedness, you are consistently on guard for learning opportunities and places to put into practice all that knowledge and wisdom you’ve got floating around up there. I owe you immense gratitude for this: because you are willing to learn on the fly and are constantly in pursuit of growth, I am consistently challenged to do the same. It isn’t always my instinct to ask questions first, but thanks to you, I find myself jumping recklessly into danger a lot less often (sorry I don’t listen more…).

Thank you, too, for your willingness to walk beside me in the journey as I discover the value of pausing to smell the roses. If left to my own devices, I’d have never noticed the flowers of life; I’d have blown right on past them. But you take notice of these things, and you hold them up to declare their beauty and value.

Luna Lovegood leans toward the camera and says "Keeps away the Nargles." Ron stares at her, confused.

i’m proud of you

Just like Luna Lovegood, sometimes the world really, really, really wants to put you into a box. But you don’t do boxes, not if they force you to be someone you aren’t. I know it’s hard to be in your head sometimes, but I am so proud of you for living unapologetically as the brilliant, sharp-minded human that you are. Please keep resisting the box, because you were never meant to be squished.

I am also immensely proud of the way you never stop learning. We live in a time where people are often content to follow whatever source supports their worldview, but you are the shining warrior against such heinous methods of existence. You challenge others to examine what they believe, where they get their information, and how their decisions impact the world long-term. We need more of this in the world.

Also, congratulations on managing to unlock more than 10% of your brain. One hundred points to Ravenclaw!

I hope you know…

You are the friend who holds the stars in your hands and teaches me to appreciate them. Without you, I’d have never known just how much there is to learn and love about this place we call home.

Your creativity inspires others. And I’m not just talking about paint on a canvas or photos on a wall. No, I’m talking about the innovative, mesmerizing way that you approach life. You are brand new; there has never been another you. Although you may not see it, others do. The life you live is a powerful and beautiful thing.

And, finally, my Ravenclaw friend, I hope you know that you are loved. The pieces you hide for fear of uncovering what you cannot know? Loved. Wholly, fully, entirely. Always.

All my love,

Me

As a pastor, much of my job is about relationships As a pastor, much of my job is about relationships. But sometimes, my job is about reclaiming sacred spaces that time has taken from us. Recently I got to reclaim this beautiful stained glass window that had been hidden behind a projector screen for years. Now when I enter this space, I am urged to stop. To take in the light. To breathe in the renewal of the cross. Although pastoring is a kind of difficult that cannot be put into words, it is also an incredible gift to spend so much time in the sacred — so much time alongside the light of the world. It’s beautiful when that manifests in the present, right beside us, as a reminder that God is with us, and God is within us, too.

Book 4 of ‘22 — this is my second read by Fred Book 4 of ‘22 — this is my second read by Fredrik Backman (see previous post), and I have to say: I LOVED THIS BOOK! Although I really enjoyed the first book I read of his, Ove and his community won my heart so much faster than the previous read. The book started much darker than I anticipated, but I caught on quickly that things were headed in a lighter direction. It was a witty, charming perspective on heavy topics: grief, depression, and suicide. But I am so thankful to say that community wins in this one. So thankful for the character growth and the laughs that Ove and his unexpected crew gave to me. 5⭐️ for “A Man Called Ove” — I will probably even read this book again, and that’s saying something!

Book 3 of 2022 | A beloved college professor of mi Book 3 of 2022 | A beloved college professor of mine recommended this and another of Fredrik Backman’s books to me, and I chose this one first because, *ahem,* I liked the cover. 🤷🏼‍♀️😅 Elsa was a precious character, full of innocence and trouble all at once. My favorite element of the story was the wurse (what us common folk would call a dog). Although I struggled to follow the narrative at times and the finale didn’t seem “big enough” for Granny’s fairytales, I did cry while reading this and finished it relatively quickly. I just purchased my next Backman read, and I’m curious to see how the two compare! 4⭐️ for “My Grandmother Asked Me To Tell You She’s Sorry.”

My husband and I are mildly (majorly?) into Disney-Pixar’s “Up.” We named our first dog Ellie and our wedding included several thoughtful, fancied-up elements from the film. Our mailbox even features our handprints and names in the style of Ellie and Carl. This is where the balloons come into play in my logo. 🎈

The heart shape is pretty self-explanatory, given my name. 💖 Finally, the bright colors and watercolor style speak to the vibrant, abundant, creative life I have been called to live and lead others to as well. 💚🧡💜💙❤️
