A letter to my Hufflepuff friends

All Posts· Harry Potter· Relationships

A Hufflepuff-themed photo: yellow pants, black and white striped dress, "Deathly Hallows," white flowers, Hogwarts letter, unfolded map from Universal Studios, a wand, and fairy lights.

My dear Hufflepuff friend,

First of all, I’m pretty sure the song “Wind Beneath My Wings” was written about you. In all things, you are the unsung hero. You are the best at loving people and leading by example. Every step of the way, you are the quiet guide, a light in the dark of night for your people to lean on, follow, and grow from.

Sometimes, your natural loyalty, dedication, and hard work gets lost in the glory of the front lines. But without you, there would be no front lines. Without you, entire societies would collapse. You are the backbone that keeps us moving.

thank you

My sweet Hufflepuff, thank you for teaching me the value of giving 100% in every area of life: in relationships, at work, in school, and even in taking care of myself. Watching you dedicate your time and effort to projects and people you care about has made me a better person. I have learned to be a better friend, coworker, and person simply by watching the steadfast way in which you live. The person I was before I met you was in desperate need of some Hufflepuff magic.

Thank you, too, for reminding me that I am both loved and worthy of love. When I forget this, you are always quick to reveal the truth and squash the lies.

And, in case I haven’t told you lately, thank you for being the absolute best friend I have ever or could ever have. You are the epitome of friendship. I would be lost without you. One hundred points to Hufflepuff for friendship!

I’m proud of you

Your strength of heart and resolve consistently astound me. When life is scary, overwhelming, and hard, you somehow manage to hold tightly to your values. You are not afraid to take the path less traveled or to live a life of challenge and difficulty for the sake of staying true to the values that you hold dear. Not many people can claim that for themselves, but you, my friend, most certainly can. You aren’t in this life to squash other people for your own benefit; you live with integrity, patience, and in true community with others. In every possible way, you are an example of how to live a good life.

You are the most accepting person I have ever known, and because of that, you have changed many lives. No doubt, you have helped people through their darkest hours without ever knowing that there was darkness surrounding them. Or maybe you did know, and others are simply too blind to see (that’s me). You are patient and kind, and I am lucky to be your friend. I am proud of you for everything you have accomplished. You keep climbing, friend. I cannot wait to see how far you will go.

I am proud, too, that you have somehow managed to keep your common room a secret all of these years. Seriously, what’s a person got to do to get a peak?!

I hope you know…

In all that you do, I hope you know that your hard work, loyalty, and passion do not go unnoticed. You truly are the mitochondria of this world—the powerhouse that keeps us energized and moving forward.

Although your place in Harry Potter is vastly underrepresented, I see you making waves and taking care of business. You are the worker bee, the caretaker, the friend in all weather. Your life shines with the luster of fierce loyalty and generous love. I hope that you will never lose your shine, for it is that very light which guides people through darkness.

Most importantly, my friend: you are loved. Immensely, deeply, unconditionally loved. That is who you are, Hufflepuff, and every day of my life, I am thankful for you.

All my love,

Me

BEfore you go…

I hold a Bachelor's degree in Bible/religion and journalism and am daily striving to decipher what it means to live abundantly in this place we call home. My heart flutters for deep conversations, One Direction jam sessions, and people who don't judge my love of children's books or 80s/90s sitcoms.

As a pastor, much of my job is about relationships As a pastor, much of my job is about relationships. But sometimes, my job is about reclaiming sacred spaces that time has taken from us. Recently I got to reclaim this beautiful stained glass window that had been hidden behind a projector screen for years. Now when I enter this space, I am urged to stop. To take in the light. To breathe in the renewal of the cross. Although pastoring is a kind of difficult that cannot be put into words, it is also an incredible gift to spend so much time in the sacred — so much time alongside the light of the world. It’s beautiful when that manifests in the present, right beside us, as a reminder that God is with us, and God is within us, too.

Book 4 of ‘22 — this is my second read by Fredrik Book 4 of ‘22 — this is my second read by Fredrik Backman (see previous post), and I have to say: I LOVED THIS BOOK! Although I really enjoyed the first book I read of his, Ove and his community won my heart so much faster than the previous read. The book started much darker than I anticipated, but I caught on quickly that things were headed in a lighter direction. It was a witty, charming perspective on heavy topics: grief, depression, and suicide. But I am so thankful to say that community wins in this one. So thankful for the character growth and the laughs that Ove and his unexpected crew gave to me. 5⭐️ for “A Man Called Ove” — I will probably even read this book again, and that’s saying something!

Book 3 of 2022 | A beloved college professor of mi Book 3 of 2022 | A beloved college professor of mine recommended this and another of Fredrik Backman’s books to me, and I chose this one first because, *ahem,* I liked the cover. 🤷🏼‍♀️😅 Elsa was a precious character, full of innocence and trouble all at once. My favorite element of the story was the wurse (what us common folk would call a dog). Although I struggled to follow the narrative at times and the finale didn’t seem “big enough” for Granny’s fairytales, I did cry while reading this and finished it relatively quickly. I just purchased my next Backman read, and I’m curious to see how the two compare! 4⭐️ for “My Grandmother Asked Me To Tell You She’s Sorry.”

After years with a simple black and white logo I c After years with a simple black and white logo I created on Photoshop in college, I finally rebranded my website with something more representative of my mission and purpose!

My husband and I are mildly (majorly?) into Disney-Pixar’s “Up.” We named our first dog Ellie and our wedding included several thoughtful, fancied-up elements from the film. Our mailbox even features our handprints and names in the style of Ellie and Carl. This is where the balloons come into play in my logo. 🎈

The heart shape is pretty self-explanatory, given my name. 💖 Finally, the bright colors and watercolor style speak to the vibrant, abundant, creative life I have been called to live and lead others to as well. 💚🧡💜💙❤️
